Hello, lovely Artists!

Like most of my "latest" entries, I would like to start this one with an apology for not being around here. I've been mostly working on projects at my company, building portfolios, and sometimes I have a little time for personal work as well without any deadlines or technical limitations (that would affect anything, other than my own patience :D). So - sorry!

The reason why I snuck back in here is to share with you one of the most exciting things we've been working on at D&D Creations. If you clicked on the link, you might have noticed, that we have a brand new website, a brand new webshop and.... a page reserved for our Training Center, which can launch at any time now! That's what I would like to tell you about. You're gonna like it. ;)
The whole thing started with a long illness, and desperately trying to outsource whatever projects we could. During my forced R&R, I had plenty of time to think about the future of the business, and about ways we can expand our circles, bringing aspiring artists and professionals together. Then, my other half Michel and I came up with the idea: "Let's launch a Training Center!" A Training Center that stands, out, a Training Center that focuses on specific topics and practical tips & tricks straight out of the industry, rather than wading through the interface and the buttons of an application. A Training Center that offers lifetime access to video trainings, hosts live events, webinars and workshops, truly brings artists from all skill levels and backgrounds together. That's how we came across Sam, a 17-year veteran in the video game industry, and his friends and colleagues, who were also excited to become instructors. One thing led to another, and, within a couple of weeks, we had a plan, a brand new website, an integrated online LMS (learning management system), and a bunch of talented guys ready to pass their knowledge on to the "next generation".

In this entry, I would like to invite you guys to listen to our Podcast, where we introduce Sam, our Supervising Instructor. We really enjoyed recording this interview, Sam is a very nice guy, has an enjoyable character, and he's also an excellent, experienced tutor. We are honored to have him in our team!

Santuary2017
Lately, I've seen many artists challenging themselves to remake their artwork they made several years ago. With such challenge, you can see how much you've improved throughout the years, or - even if you didn't change your workflow significantly - you can compare how you build your final work based on the same idea or concept. This inspired me to start my own REBOOT series. I pick old works, and re-build a similar scene based on the same idea or concept (that's why I use the term "reboot" instead of "remake" ;) ).

For the first attempt in the series, I picked one of my favorite scenes, "Sanctuary" from 2009. This was already quite a challenge, because - apart from some minor things - I was and still am pretty satisfied with the original result, and, halfway through the process, I realized that rebooting an iconic work might not be the best idea. Even though my skills (might) have improved, that artwork is a part of my "history", and it's out there, with its beauty as well as its flaws... just think of rebooting Star Wars... better CG, but still... it's hard to explain, but I'm sure you know what I mean. :)

The original Sanctuary: 00angelicdevil00.deviantart.co…

But even though the next REBOOT will be a scene that was easy to forget, I just wanted to finish Sanctuary 2017. I did a couple of things differently - even in the original version, I wanted the temple ruin to be on the top of a rock arch, but I didn't have the skills and the tools to make one. So, this time, I modelled an arch myself (the basic shape was created in VUE with primitives turned into a metablob, and I sculpted the details in ZBrush). I also used way more complex materials and ecosystems; instead of a single layer of procedural rock material (plus a pretty uniform ecosystem), the new arch and mid-ground mountains have ~8 layers of hybrid materials, including seamless bitmaps and fractal-based procedural materials as well. The lighting model has also changed from standard spectral to photometric.

The scene took awful long to render, and the 3 Windows updates out of nowhere (despite the fact that I re-scheduled them) challenged my patience even more. It was quite a ride!

Superior
This personal project was inspired by the islands on Lake Superior. It was quite a challenge to achieve a result that even slightly resembles those stratified islands. When I stumbled upon these great 3D brushes at textures.com, I thought I'd download them for a test ride, and try them on VUE's heightfield terrains.... although they were originally created as sculpting brushes and alphas for ZBrush. (I also tested them in ZBrush for a future project)

Rainy Night
When I googled for "wet cobblestones" references, I found this one - a path of cobblestones leading through an urban park at night, it's raining.
The challenge was achieving the same highlight and reflection effects; I had to apply some extreme values in order to achieve something that's natural and realistic...

Fish Eye View
The good thing about having Bing Daily Wallpaper on your phone is that you can get lots of inspiration each day. A couple of days ago, another daily wallpaper appeared - a photo of water lilies from a unique perspective; taken from below with an extremely wide angle lens. This was something I haven't tried before, so I wanted to give it a shot.
The lilies are from Xfrog Flowers 3, the translucency with variable depth on the leaves was a true challenge to render, but I was quite happy with the underwater rays I achieved even at such a small scale.
I also thought it would be interesting to add a dragonfly and an eagle soairing high, to demonstrate different "layers" of wildlife under and above water.

I have made a tribute to your work while trying to reproduce one of your last picture in Bryce 7 pro. Here's the result :

Drea,  Love your work in Vue and thanks for your efforts in developing training materials for us newbies!  I've used your recommended render settings many times.  So for all the time you have already saved me, thanks!  I look forward to seeing your future renders!
